Flying to Jeddah
Prepare before boarding or during the flight and enter Ihram before the aircraft crosses the Miqat line. Jeddah airport is normally too late for a traveler already intending Umrah.
Read flight instructionsStaying in Madinah first
You are not in Ihram while visiting Madinah. Enter Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah when later traveling from Madinah toward Makkah.

The five principal Miqat locations
| Miqat | Modern name or facility | Who uses it? | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhul Hulayfah | Abyar Ali · Masjid al-Shajarah | Madinah and anyone traveling through its route | North · Approximately 420 km by route from Makkah |
| Al-Juhfah | Rabigh is used today | Levant, Egypt, North Africa, Yanbu and travelers on that route | Northwest · Approximately 186–187 km from Makkah |
| Qarn al-Manazil | Al-Sayl al-Kabir · Wadi Muharram alignment | Najd, Riyadh, Gulf routes and travelers approaching through Taif | East · Roughly 75–94 km depending on the aligned facility and route |
| Yalamlam | Al-Sa‘diyyah facility | Yemen, Jazan, Abha, Najran and southern routes | South · Approximately 115–120 km from Makkah |
| Dhat Irq | Al-Daribah | Iraq, northeastern Saudi Arabia and travelers on that route | Northeast · Approximately 92–100 km from Makkah |
Distances differ across official guides because they may measure road distance, boundary alignment or a modern mosque facility. Use them for orientation, not for timing your Ihram by odometer.

Location details
Understand each Miqat before traveling
North approach
Dhul Hulayfah
Abyar Ali · Masjid al-Shajarah
Who passes here?
Madinah and anyone traveling through its route.
Approximately 420 km by route from Makkah
What is this location?
The Miqat used when leaving Madinah for Makkah. It is the farthest of the five principal Miqats from Makkah and has a large mosque, washing areas and changing facilities. The Prophet ﷺ entered Ihram from this area for Hajj and Umrah.
Northwest approach
Al-Juhfah
Rabigh is used today
Who passes here?
Levant, Egypt, North Africa, Yanbu and travelers on that route.
Approximately 186–187 km from Makkah
What is this location?
Al-Juhfah is the original Miqat named in the Sunnah. Because the old settlement became deserted, pilgrims commonly enter Ihram from Rabigh, which lies in line with it and provides modern facilities.
East approach
Qarn al-Manazil
Al-Sayl al-Kabir · Wadi Muharram alignment
Who passes here?
Najd, Riyadh, Gulf routes and travelers approaching through Taif.
Roughly 75–94 km depending on the aligned facility and route
What is this location?
Qarn al-Manazil is the eastern Miqat. Al-Sayl al-Kabir serves the main valley route, while Wadi Muharram lies in alignment with Qarn for travelers descending from Taif through Al Hada.
South approach
Yalamlam
Al-Sa‘diyyah facility
Who passes here?
Yemen, Jazan, Abha, Najran and southern routes.
Approximately 115–120 km from Makkah
What is this location?
Yalamlam is the southern Miqat, named for the mountain and valley south of Makkah. Modern travelers commonly use the Al-Sa‘diyyah mosque and facilities located in the Yalamlam alignment.
Northeast approach
Dhat Irq
Al-Daribah
Who passes here?
Iraq, northeastern Saudi Arabia and travelers on that route.
Approximately 92–100 km from Makkah
What is this location?
Dhat Irq is the northeastern Miqat used for the Iraqi approach and those traveling along the same corridor. Its modern facility is commonly associated with Al-Daribah.
Miqat rules
The rules that prevent the most common mistakes
Choose by route
The Miqats apply to their residents and anyone else who passes along those routes. Nationality does not decide the Miqat.
Prepare before the boundary
Ghusl, grooming and changing clothes can happen earlier. Men wear the two Ihram cloths; women wear normal modest clothing that meets Ihram rules.
Intention creates Ihram
Wearing Ihram cloth alone does not enter the sacred state. Make the intention to begin Umrah and start Talbiyah before crossing the Miqat.
Do not cross while intending Umrah
A person already intending Hajj or Umrah may not deliberately pass the applicable Miqat without Ihram. If this happens, seek qualified scholarly guidance promptly.
If you are inside Makkah
For a new Umrah, leave the Haram boundary to an area of Hill such as Tan‘im or Ji‘ranah, enter Ihram there and return. A particular mosque is not required.
If you genuinely live in Jeddah
Someone whose residence is inside the Miqat boundaries begins Ihram from their residence. This does not make Jeddah airport a substitute Miqat for an incoming traveler already intending Umrah.
Ihram from airport and airplane
A flight-safe preparation timeline
Before leaving home
Complete grooming, ghusl and packing. Keep sandals, waist belt and Ihram garments accessible.
At departure airport
Men may put on Ihram cloth before boarding. Women remain in suitable modest clothing. You have not entered Ihram merely by changing clothes.
Before Miqat announcement
Make the intention and begin Talbiyah early enough that turbulence, sleep or a missed announcement cannot take you beyond the line.
After intention
Observe all Ihram restrictions. Continue Talbiyah during the journey until beginning Tawaf.
Do not plan to enter Ihram after landing in Jeddah
If your flight is going directly toward Jeddah and you already intend Umrah, it normally crosses a Miqat alignment before landing. Airport announcements are helpful but are not guaranteed on every flight. Ask the airline, monitor the route and make intention conservatively before the boundary.
Common route questions
Quick answers before departure
Can I wear Ihram clothes at home but make intention later?
Yes. Clothing and the state of Ihram are not identical. Prepare early, then make the intention and Talbiyah before crossing your Miqat.
What if my flight goes to Madinah first?
Do not enter Ihram merely for landing in Madinah if you will stay there first. When departing Madinah for Makkah, use Dhul Hulayfah.
Can I use Masjid Aisha instead of the flight Miqat?
Not when you were already intending Umrah before flying into Jeddah. Tan‘im is used by someone already inside the Haram who begins a new Umrah, not as a planned replacement for an incoming Miqat.
What if I crossed the Miqat accidentally?
Make the intention as soon as you realize and ask a qualified scholar about returning to the Miqat or any required compensation. The ruling depends on what happened and should not be guessed from a generic page.
